Stratford Police were involved in a 17 hour standoff with a 52 year old St Marys man which ended without incident on Tuesday.

A notice of apprehension, issued by the Ontario court of justice authorized police to take the man under the Mental Health Act and bring him to hospital for assessment.

When officers arrived just after 4:30pm, police say he threatened to kill the officers while holding a knife. Police then backed away and began to negotiate with the man.

A tactical unit in Stratford, officers trained in negotiation, Waterloo Police and a mental health clinician from the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance were on the scene. Negotiations continued throughout the night, ending before 9:30am on Tuesday.

The man has been charged with uttering threats, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose.

The 52 year old was taken to hospital and will attend court on November 22nd.
