A charity act always begins with the best of intentions. But sometimes a new reality makes the organizer of a good deed re-evaluate the feasibility of how achievable the goal now is.
This was the case for the fundraising campaign being put on by the Arthur Lions for the Brent Barnes Memorial Skatepark.
Lions Club Member Al Rawlins explains.
“We started 3 years ago. At that time we established a budget of about $225-250,000. We set three years because we wanted it installed and open for the 150 Anniversary of the founding of the Village of Arthur.”
The wrinkle that hit their fundraising timeline was the Covid-19 pandemic and the inability for them to hold their fundraising events.
“Nobody knew the pandemic was going to be this bad. Basically we’ve lost about the last year and a half because of covid. Most of our fundraising events are based on food. And with covid you know what it’s done to restaurants. They’ve been hit hard.”
But just like a miracle that comes to a praying man the fundraising committee has received something similar with an out of the blue donation.
“And then the sky opened up. And we got that major donation. It’s been a game changer. It’s doubled what we had.”
The fundraising was sitting at approximately $90,000 from fundraising up until this point. This is when an anonymous donor stepped forward and gave an unbelievable $100,000 to the Memorial Skatepark campaign. What this means for the campaign is immense.
“Up until 3 weeks ago we thought it was just going to be 1 phase, one item like the slab with skate board jumps. But this it’s changed the whole ball game and allows at least 2 of the features and who knows.”
