When it comes to the protection of animals it comes as no surprise that there are some people who see the need for offering a voice to the helpless in our society.
One of those people is Kathi Newell-Nicholson, founder of the Adopt-A-Pet Pet Rescue in Lucknow. She tells us how it got started.
“My husky was in boarding while I was at work because when I got her she was pregnant. So we were talking amongst ourselves and the kennel owners mentioned to me that some of the dogs that were there were going to put to sleep after their 3 day stray hold. That is how I started as I said that makes no sense that animals would get put to sleep because they weren’t claimed by their owner.”
In the operation for Adopt-A-Pet Rescue they receive no outside funding from any level of government.
“There is no funding what so ever. We are completely volunteer run. In fact I pay for the hydro for the cat shelter and the phone line for the rescue myself.”
When an animal arrives at the rescue in need of medical treatment the people that don’t put any thought into who will pay for the work needed just in providing relief for the animal.
“Many many times we have animals that we fix off of the street that have no owners. When they are feral cats we cannot ne3cessarily adopt them out. So we are paying lots of money to make sure these animals off of the streets are fixed and looked after. There is no money coming in for that either.”
Kathi tells us the biggest expenses in operating the pet rescue.
“Our biggest expense per month is the food. The litter for the cats, and then for the dogs of course collars.”
The Adopt-A-Pet Rescue is always looking for volunteers to help out in their assisting of animals in need. They also appreciate all the fundraisers being done by the community to help them out.
“With Covid we haven’t been able to do any of the open houses for adoption or any of our regular events for our fundraisers. We are grateful for the people that have had lemonade stands or donated in any way.”
