They say friendly competition is the perfect inspiration for doing something great. And when it comes to fitness Belinda Cox a gym teacher at Centre Wellington District High School used some local inspiration to join the Guinness Book of World Records recently for most chest-to-ground burpees by a woman in 1 hour. She explains.

“I really didn’t know it was a thing until I read an article on Alison Brown who I believe is from Listowel. It was published in December 2020.”

Fitness isn’t something new for Belinda. She takes us through a brief overview of how it has played a part in her life.

“I was a freestyle wrestler. I started wrestling when I was in grade 10 in high school, university and in graduate school I was a freestyle competitive wrestler. I competed in national and international levels.”

She then made fitness her career. She has had a few stops along the way leading up to her time in Centre Wellington.

“After wrestling when I was a Physed teacher in high school I was at the tail end of my wrestling career. I then got into Cross Fit when it just started. I’ve been a physed teacher for 12 years.”

Belinda has had a lot of support in her successful attempt at breaking the Guinness World Burpee Record. She tells about the amazing response.

“I did receive an email from Alison Brown the previous record holder. It was wonderful, very positive and I credit her for inspiring me to do this. I think more women and people will know and are aware of this and more will make attempts.”
