The Federal Government announced today that Canada is in line to receive over 200,000 additional doses of Pfizer vaccine by the end of December.

They also announced that they are in line to start receiving the Moderna vaccine candidate within 48 hours of Health Canada approval.

Federal Minister of Public Services and Procurement Anita Anand says there are other changes in store as the availability of the Pfizer vaccines increases.

“We will have 70 sites ready to administer those doses. This is up from 14 sites this week. Here in Canada we are ensuring logistic systems are in place for the distribution of these vaccines right across the country.”

In terms of the Moderna vaccine Prime Minister Trudeau confirmed today that Canada is contracted to receive up to 168,000 doses of the candidate by the end of the year.

The difference in effectiveness between the 2 vaccines is minor with both achieving over 94 percent effectiveness in preventing Covid-19.

Storage is easier with the Moderna version as it only needs to be kept at a temperature of 2 to 7 degrees Celcius as opposed to Pfizer which requires -70 degrees.
