A lithium ion battery has sparked a blaze in Harriston leading to $500,000 worth of damages.

Crews responded to the call on Friday at around 10pm to serious structure fire in a residential garage which was learned to have started from a lithium ion battery which ignited.

Minto Fire crews were joined with Wellington North Fire with the fire contained before it could spread with no injuries being reported.

Minto Fire says this highlights the growing risk associated with lithium ion batteries which are commonly used in rechargeable tools, e-bikes and household devices.

The fire department is urging everyone to take battery safety seriously especially as the colder months approach.
