There’s a saying that says when you do something you love you never work a day in your life. This is partially true for Duane and Jean Erb. They are the currently operators of the Orange Barn in Millbank.
They started out helping the past owner of the business unload the fruit when it arrived at the original location of the business. He planted the seed of sorts of owning the business when he mentioned to the owner at that time that if they wanted to sell the business he would be interested in buying it.
“We enjoyed it when I was working for the other people. We enjoyed it and we didn’t want it to stop. It’s not like anything you’d get anywhere else.”
Their business is primarily in oranges and grapefruit. They are grown in Florida and California. The thing that keeps customers coming back season after season is the fact that all of their produce is fresh. If they are picked on a Monday they will be in-store likely the following weekend.
“I have clients that have been coming for 40 years. They come from Owen Sound, Hanover, Guelph, Hamilton, Toronto, London. Someone called and they are coming from Niagara on the Lake. We love meeting the people.”
The best way to keep up to date what will be in stock at future sales is to visit their website at orangebarn dot ca. They tell customers that it’s first come first served with the Orange Barn. They have had times where they opened early on a Friday and sell out prior to that weekend.
“The website is where they should be checking. WE keep posting up-to-date as to what is available.”
