It’s one thing for a newspaper to write stories that resonate with readers and get them thinking about issues in their community. It’s another thing to write articles that receive notice from your peers and are recognized as some of the best in the business at large.

The later is the case for Midwestern Newspapers; publisher of the Listowel Banner, Walkterton Herald Times and Wingham Advance Times among onthers.

The organization has been recognized as finalists for the 2020 Better Newspapers Competition. They have been named one of three finalists in 9 categories.

The Banner has received recognition for stories on North Perth Artists finding new ways to create in Covid-19, Headline Writing, News Photos for a Hero’s Embrace, Sports Section, their work with the Rotary Club of Listowel and Best Original Idea for Guess Who’s Next Door.

The Walkerton Times received a nomination for Best Features Page for a 20 year retrospective on the Walkerton Water Crisis.

The Wingham Advance Times received a nod for Best Sports & Rec Story for Creatiing a Frozen Masterpiece and the Art of the Ideal Curling Sheet.

The first, second and third place winners will be announced during a virtual ceremony on Friday, April 23rd.

The GM of Midwestern Newspapers Bill Huether says that for them to be nominated for 9 categories in the Better Newspaper Competition is an amazing achievement. The group faces up against the best newspapers across the Province and he is proud of the staff who made the nominations possible.

Congratulations to those at Midwestern Newspapers for their nominations and for being a vital news source for residents in Listowel, Wingham, Walkerton and beyond.
