Howick Approves Compensation Increase for Firefighter Maintenance

Howick has approved an increase for firefighter compensation for truck and equipment maintenance.

Firefighters are required to complete weekly inspections of trucks and equipment which over the last year has seen inspections increased and take more time to finish.

Staff believe to address the changes, compensation should be increased matching the new time required to complete inspections.

A typical inspection includes inventory checks, testing equipment and pump testing but now have added in air brake testing and circle checks, driving test per manufacturer specifications and more.

The change applied will now see the increased rate for firefighters from $17.74 to $29.97 per instance.
