WDG Public Health Reports First Monkeypox Case

Public health officials with Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph have confirmed the first case on monkeypox within the region.

Officials add there is no increased risk to the general public.

The first case of the virus was found in a man from Guelph aged 20-30th according to a press release.

Dr. Matthew Tenenbaum, Associate Medical Officer of Health says a close contact of a positive monkeypox case is defined as someone who has had intimate skin to skin contact with the monkeypox rash.

Officials add public health is following up with treatment, notifying those who could be at risk may require vaccination against the virus.

Monkeypox is related to the smallpox virus but has less severe symptoms.
