Unemployment Rate Drops Locally in March

According to stats from the Stratford-Bruce Economic Region, unemployment dropped across the board last month.

A decrease of 0.1 per cent puts the rate to 4.5 per cent, marking the second lowest in Ontario.

This is different from the province as a whole which saw an increase in unemployment by 0.1 per cent to push the number to 6.2 per cent.

Full time jobs soared for March with 2200 full time jobs and 800 part time.

The biggest rises were seen in the goods producing sector, agriculture and manufacturing with a drop in healthcare and social assistance.

We are continuing to see that the local unemployment rate remains one of the lowest in the province. We need to focus on helping workers acquire the skills they need for available positions, as well as supporting individuals who may have left the workforce and are now in a position to re-enter the labour market” says Sarah Pelton, Executive Director of the Four County Labour Market Planning Board.
