Stratford Officer Found Not Negligent in Death of Baby

Ontario’s police watchdog has found no reasonable grounds to believe there was criminal negligence of a Stratford police officer in the death of an 18 month old boy in February last year.

While the Special Investigations Unit report did say the officer fell short in their duty of care towards the child, it was determined their conduct did not violate the limits of care prescribed by criminal law.

First responders were dispatched to an address on Downie Street in February 2021 when they arrived to find a child with missing vital signs.

Several weeks later, members of Stratford Police had information raising concerns about the childs welfare which rose questions on whether the police could have intervened to prevent the death of the child.
