Report Shows Stratford Council Broke Transparency Rules in Closed Door Meetings

A report from Cunningham Swan Lawyers shows Stratford council broke many transparency rules at a large handful of closed door meetings during an 18 month period dating back to January 2020.

A review of 56 closed door meetings from January 1st 2020 to June 14th 2021 showed all of the public motions city council passed in their closed meetings failed to meet transparency related requirements under the Ontario Municipal Act.

Among some of the meetings, 10 cases showed city council’s agenda citing the wrong reason to move into a closed session, eight discussions went beyond what was cited on the closed door agenda to issues which should have been publicly discussed.

The investigation was done following complaints from Get Concerned Stratford.
