Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health is paying closer attention to five reportable disease which saw a rise in 2024.
Public health’s board of health says some diseases they are watching include Pertussis, Lyme Disease, Salmonella, Giardia and Shigella.
These disease are have greatest impact to the vulnerable population such as infants, elderly and those who are immunocompromised and all have risks for outbreaks.
Lyme disease, mostly spread by blacklegged ticks have risen from two cases per 100,000 people in 2019 to eight in 2024.
