Police Negotiate with Man Carrying Sheathed Sword in Avon River

Stratford Intermediate school was placed on lockdown yesterday afternoon as Stratford police negotiated with a man carrying a sheathed sword who had jumped into the Avon River.

Police say they negotiated the man who appeared to be intoxicated and was not threatening anyone.

After two hours the man agreed to come out of the river and accept medical treatment.

Students were seen leaving the school at 3pm following police having the situation under control.

A part of St Vincent Street South behind the school was blocked off by emergency response crews as well as T.J Dolan Drive from St Vincent Street to Huron Street.
