There has been a lot of press recently about the anniversary of us reaching the 1 year point in the ongoing pandemic. Our whole society has been altered by the Covid-19 virus and it has taken a toll on who we are as individuals, what we are able to do and what supports there are and the methods in which they are available.
One person who is doing their part in keeping the dialog open in terms of those dealing with both mental illness and the battle of drug addiction is Paulie O’Byrne.
“It’s heavy for everyone right now. It’s extra heavy for people who struggle with mental health diagnoses and this season is tough for the majority of people. To put a pandemic on top of it and tell us to stay isolated because that’s the ticket for mental health is we try to stay connected and so the world to tell us to stay isolation is really putting a damper on connection with people.”
He is a public speaker as part of his I’m 1 in 5 movement that has seen him get national recognition for his work on awareness from the likes of former NHL player Theoren Fleury and Sean McCann, co-founder of the Canadian band Great Big Sea.
Paulie is a person who walks the walk and talks the talk from the journey his life has taken him on.
“I think the big thing is to always be there and stick to your work. Talk to someone. People sometimes just want to be heard. Active listening is a pretty cool thing anyone can do.”

“We know that mental health, addictions and trauma are stigmatized. Sometimes the people who look like they have it all together are the ones that may be suffer fatally from mental illness.”
