OPP are asking residents to stay off lakes and rivers as the ice starts to melt.
As warmer weather above 0 arrives and for the time being is sticking around, OPP are reminding residents to stay off the ice on lakes and rivers as they’ve thawed and are unsafe to be on.
Amanda Allen from OPP West says the risks of winter recreation accidents during above 0 temperatures are much higher.
“Over 40 percent of snowmobile incidents investigated by OPP in the last 10 years involved lakes or rivers.” said Allen
OPP recently have had to conduct rescues on hikers being stranded after they were split off from the land as ice breaks off from lakes.
