OPP remind Residents that School is Just around the Corner

The OPP would like to take an opportunity to remind residents that children will be returning to school soon and it’s all residents responsibility to keep them safe.

Parents are asked to talk to their children about being safe when going to and coming from school.

They also remind parents that cyclists under the age of 18 are required to wear a properly fitted bike helmet. They must obey all the same rules of the roads as vehicles.

Pedestrians should stay on sidewalks and when there are none should walk on the left side of the road as far off onto the shoulder as possible facing traffic. Pedestrians and cyclists should make use of crossing guards who are returning to their posts to help children get safely across the streets.

Drivers are reminded that traffic volume will increase and commute times may be affected by bus routes. The registered owner of a vehicle can be charged if that vehicle is identified as one that fails to stop at a school bus when its overhead red signal lights are flashing.

They say together we can all make a positive difference in keeping roads safe and collision free by following the rules of the road and taking extra care and caution around school zones.
