Ontario Will Not Meet Goal of New LTC Beds

According to the province’s fiscal watchdog, Ontario will not be meeting their goal of creating 15,000 new long term care beds by the end of 2024.

The Financial Accountability Office said the 30,000 new beds promised to add over 10 years won’t be enough to meet the demands of the growing senior population in the province.

There are around 78,000 long term care beds at the moment. The biggest issues facing the province are construction delays on new beds and non renewal of existing beds.

The watchdog report also saying around 7400 beds in older homes were taken out of service during the pandemic to limit the risks of spreading COVID-19.
