Ontario Fire Related Deaths See 35 Percent Increase

The Ontario Fire Marshalls Office has released details regarding fire related deaths in the last year.

Of the fires reported, one third of them show homes without working smoke alarms, a requirement in Ontario with hefty fines for those who do not follow the requirement. Provincially 114 died in fires last year, a jump of 35 percent from last year and the trend has not slowed down.

The numbers are from various areas such as house fires to vehicle fires, but the majority of the number comes from residential blazes.

This year already has claimed the lives of 42 from fire related deaths. The worst year reported was in 2001 with 119 deaths.

No working smoke alarms has become a serious concern in the province which has seen a stricter policy since 2006. Offenders who do not follow guidelines of having smoke detectors on every floor of a dwelling and outside sleeping areas can face fines between $360-$50,000.
