A North Perth resident is out $2000 after falling victim to a scam charge.
On February 20th just before 9pm police were contacted by a resident who had been a victim of a scam over the computer.
It was determined a resident received a pop up for virus protection stating their computer was infected and needed to contact the number provided to fix the issue.
The victim granted remote access to their computer where the scammer obtained their personal information and $2000 was e-transferred by the victim.
OPP are reminding residents to never let anyone gain access to your computer and never give out personal information unless you are certain with who you’re dealing with.
Reputable agencies will not ask for this information unless you have initiated the call.
Tips to protect yourself:
·Never download anti-virus software from a pop-up or link sent to you through email.
·Update your anti-virus software often and scan your computer for viruses regularly.
·Don’t click on links or attachments in e-mails sent to you by someone you don’t know.
·Turn on your browser’s pop-up blocking feature.
·Never click on a pop up that claims your computer has a virus.
