North Perth Inspiration and Citizen of the Year Award Winners

In Mondays council meeting before any discussion on council matters, it first had to be announced the winners of the 2020 Norm Stirling Citizen of the Year and the 2020 Celebrate North Perth Inspiration Awards.

Every councilor, led by Mayor Todd Kasenberg gave some thanks for all the work volunteers do for the community as National Volunteer Week continues.

Andrea Charest from It Takes a Village was the first winner of the Celebrate North Perth Inspiration award for her work in the community which many have benefited from.

“Andrea puts more than her heart and soul to our community. Her passion for helping people runs deep. She gives up her personal time and funds to meet peoples needs.” said Mayor Kasenberg.

Charest helps rally and train volunteers, spends hours sorting donations, talks with those in need and assists them in anyway she can giving mental and emotional support to those most vulnerable in the community.

Elizabeth Johnston, President of the Listowel Agriculture Society was named the 2nd recipient of the Celebrate North Perth Inspiration award.

Johnston led the Agriculture Society and the community throughout the last year during the pandemic, treading in uncertain waters.

“The work of the Listowel Agricultural Society… under the guidance of a very dedicated and competent president, Elizabeth Johnston, the group remained optimistic and persevered.” said Deputy Mayor Doug Kellum.

The Agricultural Society saw its two biggest events canceled, the annual fair and harvest auction. The events on top of providing financial support for the society also brings the community together.  Johnston helped bring many events virtually and guided with new events and tools such as Farmers Toolbox, supporting the mental health of farmers.

The Norm Stirling Citizen of the Year was given to John Verway.

Verway started his life in Listowel in the late 1970’s with Spinright INC LP and has been dedicated to the community and those living in it since he first arrived.

Verway has spent much of his time with a long list of community groups, clubs and attending many events. Verway has been involved with the Listowel Kinsmen Club before he moved his family to Listowel in the 1980’s.

The Kinsmen have been heavily involved with community with parks and recreation which they continue to help maintain.

“Over the years Verway has filled the role of President, PaddyFest Chair and still sells PaddyFest tickets each year. John was often seen at the arena either as parent, spectator or as coach. This was very much a community hub for him and his family.” said Mayor Kasenberg

Over 10 years ago, North Perth council decided the Listowel Memorial Arena needed replacement. Council developed a recreation complex committee to work with council on a new arena, when asked to chair the committee, Verway took the role without hesitation.

“He has given generously his time for the betterment of North Perth for us and future generations.”
