North Perth has come to an agreement on an extension for policing with the OPP in the municipality.
The current agreement was set to expire on December 31st 2022 and discussion on extension, a full renewal or to let the contract expire remained as options for council to make a decision on.
Following a police services board meeting, it was recommended for council to extend the current agreement until December 31st, 2024.
The new Community Safety and Policing Act which will come into effect still doesn’t have a date to receive Royal Assent at which time all contracts will become null and void.
CAO Kriss Snell explains what the contract provides.
“The contract really does just provide us the enhancements such as the office in North Perth along with a Sergeant and the Detachment Administration Clerk. Until the act is given Royal Assent, we are recommending the contract be extended another 2 years.” said Snell.
Council gave a flawless 8-0 approval for the 2 year contract extension.
