North Perth council continues to be on the right path for a Veterans Crosswalk but it wasn’t without discussion.
Staff returned to council following an approval last month to meet with the Legion on the installation of the crosswalk near the Listowel Cenotaph.
A discussion around types of paint, and location where it was found on the east leg of Wallace Avenue North and the Elizabeth Street intersection being adjacent to the Cenotaph and Firefighter Memorial being a logical spot.
Mayor Todd Kasenberg who couldn’t support the move cited there needs to be more time to develop a policy.
“If we’re going to move forward we need a policy before we do so and we have to fully understand that we are opening ourselves up to a prescdent that will have many more folks knocking on our door, me included in a few months time as I retire as Mayor and can speak more fully about United Way. For that reason I respectfully will cast my vote in opposition of this.” said Kasenberg.
Council voted 7-2 in this discussion with staff asked to continue working with the Legion for a Veterans Crosswalk with a budget ceiling of $10,000.
Mayor Kasenberg and Marc Noordam voted against.
Noordam last month voted against the move citing the precedent a crosswalk could set.
