North Huron Approves 2024 Budget in Principle

North Huron council has approved the 2024 budget in principle.

Discussed in their new council chamber staff has been given direction to move ahead with preparations for this year’s capital projects.

The township is requesting $7,516,243 for a total tax levy, a 3.84 per cent increase over 2023.

The annual municipal tax for the average residential home in Wingham is estimated at around $2,820.21.

This works out to a year over year increase of $90.18.

Part of the budget also includes a plan to address succession planing in the fire department which Anita van Hittersum says came out of nowhere in the budget.

Fire Chief Kent Readman says this comes in anticipation of retirements.

“This is something we have to look at starting to put some money into training and succession planning to make sure we can fill that gap when that time comes because the time is not going to be all that far away when we lose our fire prevention officer.” said Readman.

Council in principle gave the green light to approve the budget.
