Wellington North council has been called on by the Mount Forest BIA to do more in cleaning up a property on Main Street which the BIA says is becoming a severe eye soar.
The building locally known as “the old tea place” on 178 Main Street South has been under demolition for several years but the BIA says no progress has been made since 2020.
Councilor Sherry Burke says she agrees with a letter shared with council, saying from what she was able to see the property is being taken over by weeds.
“Everyone understands the property is to be developed but they also believe it can also be cleaned up. The weeds when I walked past the other day are at least 4 feet high in some areas. I think this needs to be dealt with.” said Burke.
Mayor Andy Lennox has directed staff to investigate the property’s demolition status with an updated report from staff expected at some point this month.
