Minto Not Approving Neutral Zones

After much discussion in various council meetings, Minto is not approving neutral zones.

The Minto council chambers was packed to the brim Tuesday night as another discussion on neutral zones in the municipality was the key discussion.

In previous meetings this was also a major discussion following a delegation spoke with council about requesting neutral zones who obtained over 900 signatures from residents in favour of the neutral zones.

Minto Pride spoke to council on the importance of pride with others speaking to only wanting the Minto flag, Canadian flag and Legion banners being hung in town.

Mayor Dave Turton says neutral zones is not something the town can support.

“Council of the Town of Minto cannot support a bylaw to ensure crosswalks, flags and banners on public property remain neutral. Council of the Town of Minto has outlined in the new strategic plan that it will support the community vision, that the Town of Minto is a progressive, rural community where all are welcome.” said Turton.

Prior to this decision, Dan Sinclair spoke about having a citizen referendum on the manner who was told staff time and costs are among the reasons it hasn’t been considered.

Sinclair responded saying so long as he has an idea on the costs to propose fundraising to limit the cost.
