Middle Maitland Watershed Buffer Program Open

The Maitland Conservation Authority is looking for those in the Middle Maitland River watershed to get involved in a buffer planting program with 100 per cent funding being provided.

A specific focus is being put on working with landowners to create buffers along the river, drains and creeks.

Buffers help stabilize stream-banks by holding soil in place and reduce soil erosion and as they grow provide important habitat and travel corridors for wildlife and pollinators.

Marisa Roefs, Stewardship Technician says as far as what can be planted, its an open book to a degree.

“We meet with them on site and kind of talk about what their preferences are which includes species, what kind of species they’d like to see we definitely take that into consideration. They do have to native under the funding requirements that we have.” said Roefs.

The Middle Maitland River Watershed includes areas around Listowel, Atwood, Monkton, Brussels, south of Wingham and east of Milverton.
