It was a rather busy final council meeting for North Perth before taking a break for Christmas.
A big topic of discussion from council was the proposal of a program to help seniors in isolation known as the Lonely No More Program. The program would start with a 6 month pilot program. Interim Manager of Recreation, Amy Gangl says the program has a unique approach.
“What makes this program unique and desirable in rural communities is its three prong approach to combating social isolation. Peer support, health coaching and system navigation.” said Gangl.
While there are programs offering one on one calls with isolated seniors, Lonely No More takes the approach of a group call setting, allowing the use of peer support. Gangl added this program is already offered in Huron County and is incredibly well received.
“The program in Huron County has been quite successful. 75 of participants and volunteers stating the program had a positive impact on their life, especially during the pandemic. 94 percent of individuals say they would recommend the program to other community members.”
The hope to have the program running by next month faced its issues from councilors while loving the idea, especially nearing lockdown saw problems with attempting to train volunteers for the program in a short matter of time.
The vote to launch the Lonely No Pilot Program carried 10-0 after a small revision. Staff will need to provide council the outcome of the pilot before going more forward with the program such as community partnerships.
