Listowel’s own Corey Conners had another strong showing at the Players Championship in Florida this past weekend that saw him shoot a 6 under 66 and had him sitting third in the standings when he finished his round. He ended in seventh once everything had settled with all competitors.

Conners had three birdies on the weekend, holing putts from 10 feet on the 2nd, 11 feet on the sixth and 14 feet on the seventh holes.

He then made another birdie on the 10th and then set the course a blaze with an eagle on the 11th.

The 29 year old Conners added one more birdie on the 13th after getting it within 5 feet off the tee.

This has been a great year so far for Corey as his game has been gaining momentum as the months go by. The Players finish marked his 5th top 10 finish in his last 10 starts.

He has a week off before playing in the World Gold Championship Match Play and then he defends the title he won in 2019 at the Valero Texas Open. Due to the pandemic it wasn’t held last year.

He then heads from Texas to Augusta National Golf Course for the Masters where he finished tied for 10th in November.

Corey has only been playing golf professional since 2015. He started playing golf after visiting his grandparents house in Listowel who lived next door to a neighbour with a well-groomed putting green in the backyard. The home it turns out was owned by the parents of his future wife Malory.

Corey has a brush with a golf legend that offered inspiration early in his career. He had a chance meeting with fellow Canadian Moe Norman at his home course during a PGA of Canada event. Norman happened to catch Corey on the putting green and chatted him up. He gifted the young Conners with a custom driver with a more flexible shaft than he was currently using. The seed was sown.

Corey and his wife Malory currently reside in South Florida although Listowel is still announced as Corey’s hometown on the first tee of all PGA Tour Events.

From small towns came the big dream of being a professional golfer whose future gets brighter every day.
