The Howick Fire Department is joining neighbour departments when it comes to safety around the farm given the recent string of incidents around the area.
Equipment use in dry fields or while harvesting hay and crops during high winds or in hot temperatures can lead to increased risk of fires on the farm.
The fire department says to have an emergency plan to contacts and a farm map, clean dust, debris and residue build up from equipment, monitor hay moisture levels before baling, check belts for excessive heat, damage and wear and never throw cigarette buts into the field or dry grass.
