Horse in Perth County Reclassified as Negative for Rabies

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has completed further testing on a sample from a horse in Perth South which was reported to have tested positive for rabies.

After further testing, the result has been reclassified as being negative.

Senior Public Health Inspector for Huron-Perth Public Health, Dale Lyttle says this was a very unexpected first for Ontario.

A follow up with the Inspection Agency and the Ministry of Health indicated the initial test had strongly suggested a low-level positive result.

Due to the fatal nature of rabies and because of human exposure, a positive result was issued.

Public health has since followed up with individuals who were determined to have exposures to the horse.
