May is Brain Cancer Awareness month. It is the month when we all pause for a moment and focus our attention on the fight that over 50 thousand Canadians are going through being diagnosed with brain tumours each year.

Local Guelph area resident Haley Davis is currently in the middle of her fundraising run from Guelph to Goderich to raise money for The Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada and the Terry Fox Foundation.

Haley tells us why she decides to get involved with the cause.

“In 2019 at the end of the summer I found that I had a brain tumour. I got it removed. I had emergency surgery. My recovery was going well. Unfortunately this past winter I found out that the tumour had started to come back. Then I had 6 weeks of radiation therapy.”

She says this to why she chose a 150 km run from Guelph to Goderich over the Rail Trail as her fundraising method.

“I always knew I wanted to do a fundraising run of some sort. I truly did feel fortunately that I could do so many things that a lot of people couldn’t so I wanted to give back in some way.”

Haley has actually exceeded her GoFundMe campaign for the run. The Strides and Smiles campaign has more than doubled it’s original goal of $10,000. She says this to the overwhelming support of the community.

“I mean it’s incredible. I am in shock I didn’t think GoFundMe would be this successful. It’s amazing. I think it just shows that even in times like this in the pandemic that people are willing to give back.

If you happen to see Haley in the next 3 days as she is in the midst of her run on the Goderich to Guelph Rain Trail make sure to give her words of support. She is scheduled to arrive in Goderich on Wednesday to end her 150 km journey.
