Erie Meats Fined $50,000 for Worker Injury

A meat packing plant has been fined $50,000 after a worker was injured back in October of 2018.

The incident took place at Erie Meats when a temporary worker was cleaning a packer machine and removed the guards from the front of the machine to clean any plastic packing, exposing the machine. As the worker was cleaning, the machine turned on resulting in injures.

After investigation from the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development they learned the machine was not locked-out which is required by Regulation for Industrial Establishments under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Erie Meats pleaded guilty being fined $50,000 and imposing a 25 percent victim surcharge required by the Provincial Offenses act.
