If you’ve ever given serious thought about making a trip to Antarctica, an Elora resident has an opportunity of a lifetime to offer.
Ian Evans has made the trek to Antarctica three times in both fashions, both by plane and by sea making the trip through The Drake Passage, regarded as one of the most dangerous voyages for ships.
Evans first made the trip in 2015 who became the oldest Canadian to ski to the south pole from the coast.
Evans has linked with an expedition group making the trip early next year with deals Evans says he has never seen before due to COVID, the economy and the reluctance to travel.
Evans, who has crossed the Drake Passage three times says if you can avoid it, to do just that which the trip offered up does not cross the passage.
Evans adds the experience is definitely one for the most serious of explorers.
“They talk about their bucket lists, things they need to do and this would probably be on it. Having been there a few times I was always passionate about it from school, learning about the explorers to go there.” said Evans.
He adds you don’t really need too much to make the trip if you’re serious about going.
“You don’t need a lot of equipment to go on an Antarctic expedition. It’s not like you need to shell out thousands of dollars. Hiking gear, warm hat and coat and things like that would be perfect.”
