Drivers Urged Safety as Students Return to School

Students are back in class today and for drivers, its an important time to make sure you’re being safe on the roadways.

Police who were already out for the long weekend safety campaign will also be out in increased presence this week and over the school year with a focus on school zones and bus stops.

Carly McKeown with the OPP says as usual, drivers must stop for a stopped school bus.

“Motorists must stop for school buses when their red lights are flashing and stop arm extended. Not only is passing a school bus illegally and dangerous but it can result in a $400-2000 fine and six demerit points” said McKeown.

Drivers are asked to slow down in school zones and be vigilant for students walking or biking to school and obey all crossing guards.
