As consistent warm weather stays, OPP say this doesn’t mean you, your kids or pets get a pass for slacking off in the car.
As the weather gets hot, drivers will be keen to enjoy the heat with their windows down and allow their pets to poke their heads out or sit on their laps while you drive but OPP say those lap dogs could be costly.
OPP say family pets can become projectiles in a crash and Sergeant Ed Sanchuk notes how dangerous it can be to have your dog on your lap.
“While many people treat their pets as members of the family, having an animal on your lap creates a dangerous distraction that reduces your ability to safely control a vehicle. Even a small movement by an animal can interfere with steering, braking or visibility. In the event of a collision, the consequences can be devastating.” said Sanchuk.
OPP add airbag deployment can lead to serious injuries or death to you and your dog while its on your lap.
