When you lose someone you care about at a young age due to an un-diagnosed condition it is an immense lose to all those that cared about them.
This is what happened to Kristy Perrin with the lose of her husband Chris Terpstra.
“Two years ago in July Chris’ sister came to him and said something about that she had HCM, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. We found out that it is genetic. She found out she had it and she said that Chris should get tested. So we went to our doctor and of course the way healthcare works we couldn’t get him in. And he ended up passing away in November 2019.”
In an effort to keep Chris’ memory alive Kristy has started an online fundraising campaign. The purpose of the campaign is to to raise money to help people diagnosed with HCM get a defibrillator in their home in the event they have an abnormal heart rhythm or worse due to the condition.
“You can have a whole bunch of symptoms; heart murmur, shortness of breath, lightheartedness, fainting, chest paints, palpitations and one of the symptoms is sudden cardiac death.”
The fundraiser is through the Mikey Network. Kristy says she decided to to start the fundraiser after seeing many people she cares about diagnosed with HCM.
“After he died I wanted to figure out how we could do something else for others. Once you are treated you won’t die from HCM but it’s the fact you have to get treated. And with the sudden death part I wanted to do something for other people. As we found out., his family is from Brussels, and we found out a lot of them have HCM.”
