Centre Wellington is reconsidering its previous decision on supporting a letter for a new hospice within the community to the Ministry of Health.
Last month, council voted to not support the letter with councilors such as Stephen Kitras saying he couldn’t support the move as a religious person who can’t support euthanasia.
Dr. Alan Simpson and around 60 citizens had spoken with councilor Bob Foster about the decision which had council look to rethink the decision.
Foster adds since July, he has also learned much about MAID (medical assistance in dying)
“MAID is only offered to competent adults whose death is reasonably foreseeable. Dr. Simpson pointed out when I met with him, three doctors must sign off and agree as a medical consensus that death is reasonably foreseeable and the patient is suffering.” said Foster.
The key reason for not supporting the hospice in July was this location would provide medical assistance in dying.
Steven VanLeeuwen and Kitras remained against the vote.
