Bruce Power Announces Expansion in Power Generation

Bruce Power is now able to generate more power from its nuclear facility.

President and CEO Mike Rencheck announced Thursday that output has been increased to 6550 megawatts (6,550 MW), up from 6300 (6,300 MW) in 2016.

Rencheck was joined by Energy Minister Todd Smith along with Huron Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson and Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker at the Bruce Power Visitor’s Centre in Tiverton for the announcement.

Rencheck says this is made possible through their life extension program.

“New components that are more efficient, more effective, more modern. We’re modernizing its really on the cutting edge and we’re able to get more power out of the unit as a result” said Rencheck.

Energy Minister Todd Smith who says what Bruce Power is doing is incredible.

“We’re very fortunate that we have one of the greenest grids in the entire world largely because of the nuclear contribution that we get from Bruce Power.” said Smith.

Rencheck also says that they will be harvesting more medical isotopes that will be used to sterilize surgical instruments and treat certain cancers.
