Premier Danielle Smith says her government will hold a referendum on the matter coming after months of pressure from separatist activists to put independence to a provincewide vote.
The vote will not be a yes or no style and instead ask if voters want Alberta to remain in Canada or if the government should hold a second, binding referendum asking if Alberta should start a formal process of separation.
