Actor & Activist Sidney Poitier Dead at 94

Sidney Poitier, the Hollywood Actor and Social Rights activist who lead the way breaking colour barriers in Hollywood and starred in some of the most iconic films ever made has passed away.

The circumstances around his death have not been released but the Bahamian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where Poitier’s family was from.

Poitier has starred in some well known files over his career including the Defiant Ones in 1958 and Lilies in the Field in 1963. He won the first Academy Awarded for Best Actor to a person of colour in 1963.

In terms of Golden Globes Poitier has been nominated for 7 films he starred in and won for Lilies in the Fields in 1965 and the Henrietta Award for World Film Favourite and the Cecile B. DeMille Award.

He was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000.

He also released spoken word albums twice and won for his 2001 The Measure of a Man.

Sidney Poitier was 94 years old.
