Dr. Peter Sikkema joins the Ontario Agriculture Hall of Fame

Welcome to Roland’s Good News File… brought to you by Royal LePage Don Hamilton Real Estate.. I’m Roland Archer.

It’s quite the accomplishment to be inducted into any Hall Of Fame for your lifetimes work. It is an affirmation that a large part of a certain population values the contribution you’ve added to the world and recognition for a lifetimes worth of hard work you’ve done in the process.

Such is the case for Dr. Peter Sikkema’s who is being inducted into this years Ontario Agriculture Hall of Fame.

Peter grew up on a farm not too far from Listowel and decided early on what he wanted to focus his post secondary studies on.

“I grew up on a dairy and hog farm near Moorefield Ontario. While in high school I decided I wanted to go to the University of Guelph to study agriculture.”

For a person so synonymous for crop research and solution development you would be shocked to find out that wasn’t his only interests heading into school.

“My interest was either to work for farm credit in agricultural finance or possibly work in international development.”

Dr. Sikkema found his calling that would take up the last 40 or so years of his career due to a summer job with OMAFRA.

“During the summer of 1980 I worked with Harvey Wright. He had a number of different weed control experiments specifically looking at pig weed control. This piqued my interest in weed science.”

And the rest as they say is history. Here are Peter’s feelings on being recognized for his lifetimes work by being inducted into the Ontario Agriculture Hall of Fame.

“It’s surprising, humbling and gratifying to be recognized for the work I’ve done for the last 3 decades.”

Congratulations Dr. Peter Sikkema on being inducted into the 2021 Ontario Agriculture Hall of Fame.
